Pre-Kindy - Year 6
The primary school at Kearnan College provides a high-quality and engaging education to students from Pre-Kindy to Year 6.
Our single-stream primary school places an emphasis on the development of the whole child. We aim to meet the educational, social-emotional and pastoral needs of each student to ensure they are happy and confident learners who are able to positively engage with and form friendships with their peers. Using a variety of explicit and enquiry-based learning strategies, our teachers deliver high-quality instruction with a particular focus on ensuring students are well-equipped with the necessary learning skills, particularly in literacy and numeracy.
Early Childhood Education (K-2)
We believe:
- that, as a child’s first educator, parents are an integral part of their child’s learning
- in considering the whole child’s needs and acknowledge the interrelationship of the language, cognitive, creative arts, physical, social, and spiritual programs we provide
- in providing a safe and nurturing early learning environment which caters for all needs through a differentiated curriculum and we aim to provide stimulating and engaging learning experiences
- in the importance of oral language in the development of the whole child and acknowledge that this is an area of high importance that underpins all learning
- that play is integral to quality teaching and learning
- in providing a program that is sequential, explicit, self-reflective, and allows for skill and concept development
- planning is a cyclical process based on the changing needs of the children in our class
Middle-Upper Primary (3-6)
Our students are empowered to make individual, strong and sound decisions that reflect our school values.
We strive for the success of each student, with a commitment to academic excellence through explicit instruction and a knowledge-rich curriculum. The Middle/Upper Primary runs literacy and numeracy intervention programs to meet all student needs. Our dedicated educators inspire a love for learning, ensuring our students are well-prepared for the challenges of the future.
Students have access to a range of specialist learning areas such as Art, Music, Digital Technology, STEM, Languages and Physical Education. The students actively engage in problem-solving, creative and imaginative thinking and social skill development in a collaborative setting. The sharing of specialist staff and resources throughout K-12, assists in a smooth transition from Year 6 to Middle School.
Additional Learning Opportunities
Kearnan College offers our students opportunities to learn both in and outside of the classroom
Excursions to see new things and learn new skills are an important dimension in the development of all students. Students from K-5 engage in age-appropriate activities that assist in meeting curriculum outcomes, provide new experiences and grow leadership skills. Year 6 students travel to Perth for a multi-night camp, where they immerse themselves in a variety of cultural experiences, create lasting memories and strengthen their class friendships. We are proud of our students who continually embrace these opportunities to grow and learn together.
As a K – 12 school, we are in the unique position of being able to utilise many resources that are usually only found in secondary schools. The sharing of computer labs, Science labs, Home Economic centres and Design and Technology workshops allows our Year 5 and 6 students opportunities to familiarise themselves with secondary teachers and specialist resources as part of their curriculum, easing their transition to Middle School.
